Ferreira Borges Market
One of the most interesting examples of the iron architecture in Porto (which include the disappeared Crystal Palace, the D. Maria Pia and D. Luís I Bridges, the metal cover of the Nations Patio at the Stock Market Exchange, among others).
"The City Council ordered the construction of this Market to take place near the former S. Domingos convent (in 1885-88), thus replacing the old Ribeira Market. The Alliance Company finished up the construction of this market and the Massarelos Foundry carried out the project, which belonged to the architect Joăo Carlos Machado.
The market didn’t last long working accordingly to its original functions; so, in the 20th century, other alternatives for this area thus appeared. These included utilizations relation to different areas: from using it as a museum (Municipal Museum, Colonial Museum, Industrial Museum, to using it as a greenhouse. The suggestion of its demolition was put forward later on, but such a result never occurred. The Market had several utilities: garage, kitchen of the poor, and finally fruit market (1939). Nevertheless, with the extinction of the Fruits Supplying.
Market in 1978, the building soon entered an accelerated process of degradation. It was only from 1983 onwards that the building started was recovered.
